High Prices Reward the Right Bulls - and the Right Genetics

Beef markets across New Zealand are strong. But while rising schedules lift the fortunes of some, not all herds benefit equally. In a season where premium genetics increasingly equate to premium returns, the difference between average and elite breeding stock has never been clearer. At Whangara Angus, out on the rugged hill country north of Gisborne, the message is simple: markets don’t reward hope - they reward performance. Whangara Angus isn’t a farm that pampers its bulls under idealised conditions. Their cattle are bred and run in real-world, commercial environments - steep terrain, variable pasture, and the daily rigours that any commercial beef producer will recognise. If an animal doesn’t thrive under those conditions, it doesn’t stay in the herd. Stud Manager Tom Sanson says that no-nonsense philosophy translates directly into measurable performance with:
  • More calves on the ground
  • More kilos at weaning
  • More carcass weight at slaughter
  • More cows cycling and conceiving again
“These are the clear economic drivers that put dollars in pockets before any carcass grade or processor premium is paid”, Sanson says. “It’s why Whangara Angus bulls are described as “branded bulls” - genetics that stand up not just on paper, but in paddocks and pastures where commercial producers operate.” Each Whangara Angus bull is bred with traits that count: carcass characteristics at or above breed average, strong Angus Pure grading, and the growth potential that producers want to see. These aren’t novelty bulls - they’re built to put more quality beef on the rail, and more profit in the bank. The proof is in the sale ring too. Recent on-farm sales have drawn strong interest from across the country, with buyers recognising the value of structural soundness paired with well-documented genetic performance. Bulls with depth of data and proven breeding value consistently draw competitive bidding - clear evidence the industry values genetics that perform under commercial conditions. Beyond the economics, the team at Whangara Angus is also committed to offering choice to producers. Discussions about individual business goals and herd needs are part of how they match bulls to farms, not just selling bulls, but selling solutions. Mark your calendar: the on-farm bull sale will be held Tuesday, 23 June at 11am, with viewing from 9am, followed by the Tawa Hills sale at the Whangara Angus sales complex.
