A Short History

Lane; a name synonymous with the East Coast and Angus.

The Lane brothers, in one guise or another, have been farming the hill country around Whangara since 1929. It’s tough country, that demands and gets the best out of both farmer and animals.

A Short History

In 1929, aged 16 and 18 respectively, Tom and Roger Lane emigrated from Ireland to New Zealand. They bought 200 acres at Whangara from their uncle, Monsignor Lane, who was the local preacher.

They started in dairy, saved hard, and bought farms around them to increase the original holding. In 1965, they sold the dairy herd, bought more land, and started breeding Angus, because they saw the breed’s ability to thrive on the rugged steep hills and convert grass into great beef.

Today, Whangara Angus is established as a top NZ Angus stud; at the region’s last sale, our bulls commanded the highest commercial bull prices in the region, and our paddock bulls sold out within a fortnight of the sale ending. Our low birth weight bulls also sell out every year.
